Nominet (http://www.nominet.org.uk/), the governing body of the .uk domain space, has not been a happy place since the contentious Board election earlier that year (en/general/keep-greedy-domainer-slime-off-nominet-board.html). Events have really come to a head in the last week.On November 10, 2008, one of the domainer members of the Board of Directors, Jim Davies, issued a public letter (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/11/10/nominet_resignation_call/page2.html) calling for the resignation of both the CEO, Lesley Cowley, and the Executive Chairman, Bob Gilbert, of Nominet. In his letter, Mr. Davies claims that the CEO and the Executive Chairman have engaged in a campaign against him since his election, including making false allegations, including allegations of criminal conduct, and mishandling complaints against him. On November 13, 2008, one of the domainer members of the Board of Directors, Angus Hanton, resigned from the Board (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/11/10/nominet_resignation_call/page2.html). Mr Hanton submitted a blistering resignation letter, which stated in part (http://www.notnominet.org.uk/angus.htm) :I am resigning my position as a non-executive Nominet director with instant effect. As you know I have been unhappy for some instance about how the company is being run - I have had to take legal advice on at least eight separate occasions by the last few months and on each one of them I was advised that what the company was doing was wrong. Furthermore the chairman has refused to pay the costs of non-executive directors getting independent legal advice which runs contrary to good corporate governance, as does too much else at Nominet. The problems clearly lie not with the corporate structure, as David Hendon of BERR has suggested, but with the way the company is actually being run.He continued by echoing Mr. Davies and asking that Lesley Cowley's and Rob Gilbert's positions be put to a membership vote.Today, the Nominet Board issued a communique (http://www.nominet.org.uk/digitalAssets/32855_Board_Communique-November2008.pdf). In the communique, the Board states that they will be commencing legal action against Jim Davies. They claim that Mr. Davies has breached the Companies Act and has several unresolved conflicts of interest.

In his speech at the ICANN meeting in Cairo, the ITU’s Hamadoun Touré spoke openly of the ongoing ‘war’ amidst ICANN and the ITU writes Milton Mueller. Mueller notes Touré demanded a stronger role for governments in ICANN, dismissed ICANN’s GAC as cosmetic (quite wrong says Mueller) and correctly accused the IGF of avoiding issues but plus rather harshly dismissed it as a waste of moment. Mueller commended Touré for his forthrightness, which is all too rare in universal organizations. Unfortunately, his blunt speech supports the wrong cause.
